What to Wear for Epic Family Photos

Using My 3 C’s Formula to Look and Feel Your Best!

Preparing for your family portrait session can be exciting, but choosing the right outfits can sometimes feel overwhelming. To make the process easier and ensure you feel amazing during your session, I’ve created a simple formula: the 3 C’s—Comfort, Coordination, and Confidence. Let’s dive in!

1. Comfort

The key to a successful portrait session is feeling comfortable in what you're wearing. When you’re comfortable, it shows in your posture, your expressions, and your overall vibe. Choose outfits that you can move in easily, that don’t pinch or pull, and that you genuinely enjoy wearing. If you’re too focused on adjusting your clothes, it’ll be hard to relax and enjoy the experience.

Think about the environment of the shoot too. If we're outdoors, consider the weather and location. For cooler days, opt for layers. If you’re indoors, keep in mind the temperature and choose something breathable. Comfort doesn’t mean sacrificing style—it just means choosing outfits that help you feel your best.

2. Coordination

If you’re having a family or group portrait session, coordination is essential. But don’t worry—this doesn’t mean you all have to wear the same thing! Instead, aim for complementary outfits that look great together without being overly matchy.

Start by choosing a cohesive color palette. You can mix and match shades that work well together, such as soft neutrals, earthy tones, or rich jewel colors. If someone is wearing a pattern, balance it out with solid colors for others. Texture can also add a beautiful element to coordinated looks, so consider adding some layers or accessories that bring a bit of variety.

A helpful tip for families: start with one person’s outfit (often mom’s) and build around it. Focus on a balance between textures, patterns, and tones that flow naturally when standing side by side.

For further guidance, it may be helpful to know my favorite colors to photograph are mustard yellows, blues and greens, and soft pink tones! I always suggest these colors when asked, and you'll see a lot of these colors reflected throughout my portfolio. I don't recommend wearing solid black or white. If you do choose to go with a black or white palette for your session, try something with a fun texture or pattern.

3. Confidence

The final "C" is all about confidence. The clothes you wear should make you feel empowered and beautiful. When you feel good in your outfit, it translates directly into the images we capture. Whether it's your favorite flowy dress, a well-tailored suit, or that perfect pair of jeans, pick pieces that highlight your best features and make you feel like the best version of yourself.

Consider how certain colors, fits, or styles make you feel. Some people feel confident in bold, striking colors, while others feel at their best in softer, more neutral tones. Whatever makes you feel radiant and self-assured is what you should wear to your session. Confidence is the real key to making your portraits shine.

Final Thoughts

Your portrait session is all about you and your loved ones, capturing moments that reflect your personality and style. By following the 3 C’s of Comfort, Coordination, and Confidence, you’ll feel amazing, and that energy will shine through in every shot.
